“To See What You Can Do” was presented in the “Dear MKE” shorts program at the Milwaukee Film Festival on October 9, 2014. I will be reviewing each short – most under five minutes in length – and gauging whether they are worthy of expansion into a longer-form short or feature.
The most complete short featured in Dear MKE, To See What You Can Do follows the zany extremeness of the Riverwest 24, an all-day bike riding event. The filmmaker, commercial director Jack Davidson, paints an endearing portrait of one of the participants as they strive to a top finish at this community event that includes activities such as slip-and-slides and free tattoo sessions. When Dear MKE succeeds, it’s when they highlight a piece of Milwaukee’s underbelly that most either don’t know about or take for granted.
