If you’re sitting at home and thinking that The Theory of Everything is nothing but straight-up Oscar bait, you’d be right, but that shouldn’t sway you away from seeing this film. As far as 2014 biopics go, this one is the most cleanly put together, with great movement and enough set pieces to highlight two superb lead performances. Eddie Redmayne puts in a fine, and physically demanding, performance as Dr. Stephen Hawking, but Felicity Jones is the real standout here. The heaviest moments are on her, complete with stoic breakdowns and indecision, and she passes with flying colors. Unlike the dreadful Interstellar, James Marsh’s The Theory of Everything doesn’t overload you with the genius of Stephen Hawking, but instead shows you glimpses of a complicated couple trying to make sense of their own humanity.
