Aaron Sorkin is a frustrating guy with a frustrating filmography because much of it is very good but none of it is great. The Trial of the Chicago 7 can be added to the list because it’s a decent procedural – Sorkin’s wheelhouse – with solid performances all around, but the guy just cannot help but inject heroic melodrama into his narrative. It’s like “dude, we get it…these guys were trying to save the world” but Sorkin’s never been a subtle writer or filmmaker. I liked a whole lot of it but I found myself making the wanking gesture throughout. Good not great – that should be on Sorkin’s business card and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Bottom Line A good procedural political movie by Aaron Sorkin with solid performances throughout and the right amount of melodrama to keep it from being great.
