It’s tough to watch a decent concept come up short and it is due to the restrictions of the film form. The Purge never should have been a movie – it was built for literature because a writer could adequately venture into the political and social commentary that seems hamfisted on the screen. I sat there as the by-the-numbers home invasion film wrapped up with a whimper and thought how great a story it could have been if the camera pulled back a little bit, giving me a better picture of the society this “Purge” is allowed to persist in. Shame.
