Mark this as 2014’s biggest surprise, Edge of Tomorrow is the proper kick in the ass that blockbuster action/sci-fi movies needed…too bad no one saw the thing. Admittedly, the premise is cobbled together from spare parts of better movies (obligatory Groundhog Day reference), but isn’t that what makes us love director Doug Liman? He’s not a transformative filmmaker but instead he’s a student of better movies, and he turned in a deliciously-fun romp. This is what summer action films use to be – not too heady, not too dark, and always fun to watch.
